As a nerd (with a self-prescribed “healthy” obsession) for performance, understanding the motives and consequences of being an individual performance outlier—an employee with disproportionately high or low performance—is the cornerstone of Winchester's doctoral research. In this pursuit, his research is organized into three primary streams which collectively address: (1) strategically low performance, (2) high/star performance, and (3) task and structural characteristics influencing performance. In this pursuit, Winchester employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating meta-analysis, integrative reviews, experimental manipulations, surveys, qualitative interviews, and longitudinal field data, drawing from professional, online, and student samples. Through this research, Winchester seeks to provide a nuanced understanding of performance variability and its implications for effective leadership and management strategies.
